Management of nipple drinker in Pig Farm

Nipple drinkers are commonly used in pig farms. Effective management of pigs drinking water is a guarantee for the health of pigs, but it is often overlooked. For newly born piglets, 82% of their bodies are water. For 100kg pigs, 51% of the body is water. It can be seen that the importance of water to the pig's life is over half of its body weight is water.

In the first week after birth, the piglets only consumed sow's milk and then started drinking. The water from the farm's drinking system is often stagnant and warm. This type of water, combined with oxygen, can easily grow bacteria. For example, if the temperature exceeds 20°C, it will proliferate Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Therefore, it should be ensured that pigs' drinking water is cleaned and disinfected.

Research shows that when young piglets start drinking, they can increase feed intake and promote growth. Under normal circumstances, growing pigs drink 3 times the dry feed intake. Nursing sows drink at least 20 liters of water a day and are affected by climate and the environment. If the sows are difficult to stand up, feed intake is reduced, constipation, or breast-feeding is not possible, this indicates that the amount of water consumed by sows is insufficient and attention should be paid.

How to choose the right drinking water system

When selecting the drinking water system, the farm should comprehensively consider factors such as the environment, the conditions of the pig house, the temperature, the feed and the weight of the pig. For example, in the summer it should be ensured that the temperature of drinking water is below 20°C. At the same time, it is also necessary to ensure that there are sufficient drinking fountains in each pen. In order to avoid the long-term use of a drinking fountain by a pig, at least two drinking fountains should be installed in each pen.

You can choose different types of drinking fountains, commonly used duck mouth type, nipple type, cup type. Duckbill type, cup type should be installed vertically and at a low height. The nipple installation should be tilted with an angle of 15-45 degrees depending on the height of the pig.

The position of a nipple drinker in the shed

The type of pig nipple drinker, the type of pig house, and the age of the pig determine the height and position of the drinking fountain in the pig house. Should generally be 5 cm taller than the minimum height. In actual production, it is not convenient to immediately adjust the height of the drinking fountain according to the height of the pig. Therefore, the height of the drinking fountain installation is not fixed and can be in a suitable range. In the same pig house, the height of the drinking fountains can be different, so that every pig can drink water as much as possible.

Nipple drinkers should not be installed in the corner of the barn. Because pigs like to defecate at the corner of the shed, if the drinker is also installed here, it will speed up the decay of the manure. The ideal installation location should be close to the chute. The two drinking fountains in the same block cannot be located too far apart. If it is too far, one of the drinking fountains will be permanently disabled. The poor sanitation will pose a threat to the health of the pigs.

Optimum flow rate

In actual production, it often happens that the water supply of the first drinking fountain is significantly greater than the last drinking fountain. This will result in some pigs not being able to drink enough water and may also cause the drug to be unevenly distributed. In order to ensure the same amount of water from each drinker, a special water pressure adjustment device must be installed.

Drinking habits

Research shows that pigs have their own drinking habits. Finishing pigs and sows usually prefer drinking water from 3pm to 9pm, and another peak of drinking water is from 5am to 11am. Nursing sows drink water throughout the day. Understanding the drinking habits of pigs can help producers ensure adequate water supply during these peak periods.

to sum up

In pig production, water is a commonly overlooked nutrient. Maintaining a good water supply can promote the health of pigs and increase the profitability of pigs. At present, the pig farm drinking system often has problems such as irregular water quality detection, too few drinking fountains, and uneven water flow.
